Why HCG is measured in international units

HCG is quoted in IU rather than milligrams because it is standardised by biological activity against a reference preparation, not by weight. That is the convention for hormones with heterogeneous structure, where glycosylation differs between batches and sources and a milligram figure would not describe a consistent amount of activity.

It also means IU and milligram figures are not interconvertible in any general way. A conversion quoted without reference to a specific preparation is not a real number, and anyone reading across from peptide arithmetic needs to change units and change assumptions at the same time.

How a 2000IU vial is verified

A synthetic peptide is a defined molecule, and HPLC purity plus mass spectrometry characterise it well. A glycoprotein carries heterogeneous carbohydrate, so purity means something different and biological activity is the meaningful measure — which is why a certificate reporting only a percentage purity for this product would be using the wrong framework.

Fill activity matters as much as fill weight does elsewhere: the number that has to be right is the stated IU, and it is established by assay rather than by weighing. Every batch is tested before it ships, and the batch number on the vial resolves to its own certificate.

Storage and handling

Supplied lyophilised, HCG 2000IU is stable for long periods cold and dry. Glycoproteins are more fragile in solution than short synthetic peptides, so a reconstituted vial should be kept cold, dark and used within a shorter window than a typical peptide vial.

Agitation matters more here too. Direct the diluent down the inside wall of the vial and swirl gently; a large glycoprotein denatures more readily than a hexapeptide, and foaming is the visible sign it has happened. Keep the powder cold and dry until it is needed rather than mixing early.

The peptide itself is synthesised and tested in our own lab in Blacktown, NSW — not imported in bulk and relabelled here, which is how most research peptides reach the Australian market. That matters for a practical reason rather than a patriotic one: an imported peptide has a longer chain between synthesis and vial, the testing that matters happened somewhere else if it happened at all, and the certificate is one the buyer cannot trace.
